2 WLGN schools fit gender neutral bathrooms

Mon 7 Mar 2016 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

Wellington High School has transformed old gendered bathroom stalls into gender neutral bathrooms, with Onslow College in the process of making changes. Wellington High School student Rose MacKenzie told The Dominion Post; ”Some people don't identify with male or female fully, so it's hard for those people not feeling they can go into one of those bathrooms. A member of the school’s LGBTI group, UltraViolet, Mackenzie says; "If I go into one I know I'll be told this is the female bathroom, but if I go into the other I might receive threats because of, you know, what I look like.” UltraViolet raised the issue of gender neutral bathrooms with the school board, putting forward a comprehensive proposal explaining how the school could convert its bathrooms. Onslow College LGBTI Group, Club Sandwich, also proposed the idea to staff, who have taken these concerns on board and will be soon making changes to bathrooms at the school.
