Sir Ian Mckellen has spoken out following Sam Smith’s claim last night that he was the first openly gay man to win an Oscar. Smith said that he had read an article in which Sir Ian “said that no openly gay man had ever won an Oscar. “If this is the case – even if it isn’t the case – I want to dedicate this to the LGBT community all around the world.” The backlash from LGBTI people within the entertainment industry has been immense, with many people taking to social media to disapprove of Smith’s gaffe.
