Citizens of Switzerland have narrowly rejected a proposal that would have defined marriage as between a man and a woman. With 50.8 percent of citizens voting against the proposal, a constitutional change that would see unmarried couples receive tax relief currently only for married couples, it has been rejected by the public. The bill was proposed by the Christian Democratic People’s Party and named Für Ehe und Familie – Gegen die Heiratsstrafe (For marriage and family – against the penalty of marriage), it would have changed the constitution to define marriage as between a man and a woman. Switzerland allows civil unions but same-sex marriage is currently not legal in the country.
