Indonesia psychiatrists classify gay as mental disorder

Fri 26 Feb 2016 In: International News View at Wayback View at NDHA

Indonesia’s leading psychiatrists have classified homosexuality and gender dysphoria as mental disorders, saying they can be cured be “proper treatment”. The Indonesian Psychiatrists Association (IPA) has expressed its concern for LGBTI people and made the classification, despite The World Health Organisation removing homosexuality from its list of psychiatric disorders in 1970. IPA member Suzy Yusna Dewi told The Jakarta Post; “We really do care about them. What we are worried about is, if left untreated, such sexual tendencies could become a commonly accepted condition in society.” Saying that homosexuality was triggered by external factors, she says; “Without constant intervention, a person can easily return to their previous sexual tendency once he or she experiences withdrawal.” Homosexuality is legal in all areas of Indonesia apart from the province of Aceh, where canning is a punishment for homosexuality,
