Thu 25 Feb 2016 In: International News View at Wayback View at NDHA

Israel has approved the use of daily HIV medication, PrEP, with the government now considering how best to roll out the drug.   The drug, which is available in countries including the US, PrEP, or Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis, is the use of HIV treatment medication by people who are HIV-negative in order to reduce their risk of HIV infection. The Jerusalem Post reports that “The Health Ministry has approved a pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) program to prevent HIV transmission, making Israel one of the first countries outside the US to use it”. The drug was strongly back by Dr Yuval Livnat of the Israel Committee for Fighting AIDS and Dr Yuval Livnat of the Israel Committee for Fighting AIDS. In June last year, the New Zealand AIDS Foundation was given the go-ahead from Pharmac and the Ministry of Health to trial PrEP in New Zealand.
