Mr Gay New Zealand 2016 was announced yesterday at Auckland’s Big Gay Out, with Wellington charity worker Bernard Lee taking out the title. Photo by Andrea Born in Borneo, Lee moved to New Zealand in 2009 and is an active volunteer for Love Your Condom. In April last year GayNZ.com spoke to Lee after his Mr Gay Wellington win and he revealed that the former Mr Gay NZ had encouraged him to enter this year, “I was told there was no maybe, and that Matt might drag me up to Auckland in February 2016 for it.” He was up against eight finalists from around the country who went through the final round of questioning from judges; Tamati Coffey, Nikki Kaye and Medulla Oblongata on stage in front of a packed event. The finalists were judged on their formal and casual attire and were put on the spot to answer questions from the judges. Lee will head to the Mr Gay World Finals in Malta this April to represent New Zealand in the competition.
