European Union concerned for LGBTI Crimea

The European Parliament is gravely concerned about the rising levels of homophobia in Crimea. De factor Crimean leader Sergei Aksyonov Situated on the southern border of Ukraine and Russia, the region’s attitude towards LGBTI people in the region is worsening. De factor Crimean leader Sergei Aksyonov has spoken out about LGBTI people in the past and the European Parliament have this month stated, “The European Parliament expresses its grave concern regarding the situation of LGBTI people in Crimea, which has substantially worsened following the Russian annexation, and regarding repressive action and threats by the de facto authorities and paramilitary groups.” In march 2014 Russia annexed Crimea and LGBTI people have been subject to the Russian anti-LGBTI propaganda law. Recognised previously as part of Ukraine, prior to the Russian law being passed, pride events were tentatively permitted under Ukraine law.
