Gay couple marry in Australia

Tue 9 Feb 2016 In: International News View at Wayback View at NDHA

A gay couple have married on Australian soil, despite no marriage equality legislation in the country. Finding a legal loophole in the system, Dan Waknin and James Hanley married at the UK consulate under the UK’s marriage equality laws. The Consular Marriages and Marriages under Foreign Law Order 2014 allows gay couples to marry in a country where the law does not allow it if at least one person holds a UK passport. Waknin has dual British and Australian citizenship, making the marriage possible, however it will not be legally recognised in Australia. He told the Courier Mail; “The reality is we are happy and we want to be a family, we want other people to have the same right as us to marry the love of our lives. “It’s 2016. I can’t believe it’s still so hotly debated in politics. We just need to legalise gay marriage and move on to bigger issues,” he said.
