The UK is officially banning poppers from this April, with anyone passing on a bottle facing a potential seven years in jail. British politicians voted on an amendment to the Psychoactive Substances Bill that would see alkyl nitrates exempt from a ban, however a vote of 309 against to 228 for, secured the fate of the popular substance. The ban will not outlaw the use of poppers but will make it illegal to bring them into the country. Anyone passing a bottle to a lover during sex would in theory also be breaking the law. Openly gay Conservative MP, Crispin Blunt, outed himself as a user of poppers during the debate, saying, “I use poppers myself, I am a popper user and I will be directly affected by this legislation. ‘I’m shocked it’s proposed to be banned and so would very many other gay men. If I follow my own mindset reaction to this, it serves to bring the whole law into disrepute,’ he said. It is estimated that one-third of gay and bisexual men in the UK use alkyl nitrates to enhance sex.
