The Auckland Pride Festival programme has been released and this year’s lineup is looking more diverse than ever. This year’s programme has a very strong Pasifika emphasis, with a great selection of visual art, film, theatre and lifestyle events throughout the month exploring pride through the lens of the Pacific. An impressive selection of both local and international performance will also be a highlight of the festival, Australian cirque meets RuPaul’s Drag Race, Briefs, is looking like a crowdpleaser - think “boylesque” with aerial acrobatics and show stopping drag performance. With the queer film festival Outtakes no longer running, the programme features an Auckland Queer Film Festival, with a selection of films playing at the Academy Cinema including the award winning Cate Blanchett film; Carol. Proud to Play from February 13 to 21, contributes to a strong sports component this year and there’s still time to get in on the action, registrations for both Proud to Play and the Pride Tennis Tournament are still open. Lastly, the classics are back, with the annual Bear Drag Race and the Pride Debate sure to be festival favourites.
