Taiwan elects pro LGBTI rights President.

Tsai Ing-wen of the Democratic Progressive Party has been elected as the new President of Taiwan. The country’s first female president is also a vocal supporter of LGBTI rights and same-sex marriage, pledging her support a number of times last year. Notably, Tsai showed her support for the Taiwan Pride parade by lighting up the Democratic Progressive Party’s head quarters in the colours of the rainbow flag. She also recently released a video she pledged her support for marriage equality saying, “Before love, everyone is equal. I am Tsai Ing-wen, and I support marriage equality.” She went on to say; “Let everyone be able to freely love and pursue happiness.” In 2013 a same-sex marriage bill passed it’s first reading in Taiwan however progress since then has stalled.
