The Archbishop of Canterbury has apologised for the “hurt and pain” the Anglican Church has caused to LGBTI people, both in the past and present. This week Anglican leaders overwhelmingly voted to sanction a liberal US church who is known to support LGBTI people and same-sex marriage. Following the vote, The Most Reverend Justin Welb said: “For me it’s a constant source of deep sadness, the number of people who are persecuted for their sexuality. “I don’t have the right to speak for everyone. I wanted to take this opportunity…to say how sorry I am for the hurt and pain, in the past and present, the church has caused.” An open letter signed by more than one hundred senior members of the Anglican Church was addressed to the Archbishop of Canterbury and York ahead of the meeting. The letter urged the Church to “reprent” for it’s treatment of LGBTI people as “second class citizens”.
