FIFA fines countries for homophobic chants

Thu 14 Jan 2016 In: International News

Five Latin American countries are facing fines from FIFA for the use of homophobic chants during games.   Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Peru and Uruguay have been fined because of “insulting and discriminatory chants” by their fans during qualifying matches for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Chile is facing fines following incidents at four different matches and is hit the hardest with a fine of $70,000. FIFA has previously insisted that financial sanctions alone were not enough for cases of discrimination.
