HK man suing gov. for not recognising NZ marriage

Wed 30 Dec 2015 In: New Zealand Daily News

A gay Hong Kong civil worker is suing the government for failing to recognise his New Zealand marriage ceremony. Angus Leung Chun-kwong married his long-term partner in New Zealand last year but his employer, the Hong Kong government, is refusing to recognise the marriage or extend medical benefits to his husband. The civil service bureau and inland revenue department say marriage is defined as between one man and on woman so Leung’s marriage cannot be recognised. Leung has worked in the Hong Kong immigration department for over ten years and is suing both departments for violating the Hong Kong Bill of Rights, Sex Discrimination Ordinance. Same-sex marriage and civil unions are not recognised in Hong Kong.
