China's domestic violence law ignores gay couples

Wed 30 Dec 2015 In: International News

China has passed it’s first ever domestic violence law but the protections do not extend to same-sex couples.   The law, which protects all heterosexual couples against violence at home, is a first for the country and will cover both physical and psychological abuse. The law is intended to tackle the most widespread problems and will make it easier for heterosexual couples to obtain a restraining order if necessary. A member of the Legislative Affairs Commission of the Chinese parliament, Guo Linmao, says: “There are a lot of examples of domestic violence between family members, and also between people who cohabit. “As for homosexuals in our country, we have not yet discovered this form of violence, so to give you a certain answer, it can be said that people who cohabit does not include homosexuals.”
