A French politician has been fined €5000 for “publicly inciting hatred or violence” against LGBTI people. The former leader of the Christian Democratic Party, Christine Boutin, received the fine in court for her comment in a magazine interview in 2014 that “homosexuality is an abomination”. She has also been ordered to pay €2000 in damages to two French LGBTI groups. Etienne Deshoulières, lawyer for the LGBTI group Mousse, says: “This decision sets a precedent for several reasons. It is no longer possible to escape criminal liability for homophobic remarks under the guise of religious discourse.” Boutin says she will be appealing the decision.
