The US Ambassador is continuing in the footsteps of his predecessor and has signaled his support for the LGBT community here in New Zealand, hosting a dinner with prominent LGBTI community members at his residence in Wellington. US Ambassador Mark Gilbert and his wife Nancy hosted the dinner to honour the LGBTI Community in New Zealand. “The US Embassy, and previous Ambassador, have a history of supporting LGBTI rights and causes in Aotearoa and around the world,” says RainbowYOUTH General Manager Duncan Matthews. “His Excellence Ambassador Gilbert and Mrs Nancy hosting this dinner signaled recognition of what has gone before, the work that the LGBTI community is doing, and that they intend to continue supporting our community.” Ten members of the LGBTI community where in attendance including Mika Haka, Tabby Besley and Colin Mathura-Jeffree. Matthews says it was a great moment, having some of the most influential people in the LGBTI community together in one room, being listened to by representatives who have international influence.
