A Hawaiian-Tongan film featuring a transgender love story will be the last film of the 11-day Nothing Less Than Equal Film Festival in Fiji. Kumu Hina is a story about the struggle to maintain Pacific Islander culture and values within the Westernised society that is modern day Hawaiʻi and is told through the lens of a Native Hawaiian māhū, or transgender woman, and respected kumu, or teacher, cultural practitioner, and community leader. The first film festival in Fiji to focus on human rights and violence against women, it takes place as part of the United Nations campaign 16 Days of Activism. The campaign has sparked events across the Pacific highlighting gender-based violence.
