Hashtag activism for marriage equality

Tue 15 Dec 2015 In: International News

Twitter has revealed that #MarriageEquality was the third most popular hashtag of 2015. The hashtag trended particularly in May and June when Ireland and the US legalised same-sex marriage. Taking to Twitter to show support for same-sex marriage on both sides of the vote, people around the world have found a sense of community in LGBTI related hashtags. #HometoVote was used in May by Irish expats returning home to vote in the same-sex marriage referendum and #LoveWins saw people join together in celebrating the US Supreme Court decision to legalise same-sex marriage. The top ten tweets include Caitlyn Jenner’s coming out tweet “I’m so happy after such a long struggle to be living my true self. Welcome to the world Caitlyn. Can’t wait for you to get to know her/me.” US President Barack Obama’s tweet following the Supreme Court decision also made the top ten tweets, sitting at number four.
