Green MP, Jan Logie, says that Serco’s 25 year contract with the Crown for the Wiri Prison facility - where the alleged rape of a trans woman took place - “should be reconsidered”. Logie says: “Unfortunately though the Minister and the Corrections department have both said they had no concerns about the management of Wiri which is astonishing given the rape and other credible concerns of assaults and under staffing.” Prison operator Serco have lost their contract to run Mt Eden prison however still hold a 25 year contract for the Wiri Prison facility where the alleged rape of a trans inmate took place in September. “The basic model of private prison management is flawed, as has been amply demonstrated at Mt Eden. Why should we expect different or better outcomes when the same company is operating Wiri with the same motive, to generate profit for shareholders?” she says. “The government’s privatisation obsession is putting people at risk in both prisons.”
