Serco looses Mt Eden contract

Wed 9 Dec 2015 In: New Zealand Daily News

Prison operator Serco have lost their contract to run Mt Eden prison. Corrections Chief Executive Ray Smith had recommended that the contract held by Serco, which is up for review, should not be extended beyond next year. This recommendation has now been approved by the Cabinet. The contract loss comes following the news that Mt Eden prison ranked the lowest of all corrections facilities in the Department of Corrections performance tables for the year ending June 2015. The “needs improvement” ranking came following allegations of fight clubs and issues with contraband. Serco currently still have a 25 year contract for Wiri Prison, where the alleged rape of a trans inmate occurred in September. The Department of Corrections took control over the prison in July and Mt Eden Prison has previously ranked at the top of the performance table.
