Mt Eden prison ranks lowest NZ facility

Tue 8 Dec 2015 In: New Zealand Daily News

Mt Eden Prison, run by Serco, has ranked the lowest in the Department of Corrections performance tables for the year ending June 2015.   The “needs improvement” ranking comes following allegations of fight clubs and issues with contraband. Notably the alleged rape of a trans inmate in September, took place in a Serco facility in Wiri, Auckland. The Department of Corrections took control over the prison in July and Mt Eden Prison has previously ranked at the top of the performance table. Emmy Rākete of No Pride in Prisons says the Mt Eden ranking is “not surprising at all.” “This year more than a quarter of all incarcerated people have asked to be kept in segregation for their own protection. People are being  killed. Corrections is violent towards everyone, especially queer or trans people,” she says.
