Photographer recognised for powerful campaign

Sat 5 Dec 2015 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

A New Zealand photojournalist has been internationally recognised for his powerful campaign depicting the stories of persecuted LGBTI people around the world.   Kamarah Apollo is a gay man from Uganda. He became a public figure in the fight against Uganda’s anti-homosexuality laws. Photo: Robin Hammond Robin Hammond was named as one of Foreign Policy’s Top 100 Global Thinkers, recognised for his project ‘Where Love is Illegal’. The Wellington born photographer has traveled through sub-Saharan Africa for over a decade, documenting human rights and development issues. During this time, shocked to see the rise of intolerance towards LGBTI communities in some countries, Hammond began documenting these stories. In each country Hammond traveled to for this project he worked together with grass-roots LGBTI groups fighting for the rights and welfare of a people persecuted for who they are. Not only raising awareness of the injustices, the project has helped to financially support these grass-roots organisations, believing that the best way to support LGBTI people in these countries is to support the groups who are from those communities. Hammond’s images are posted on his Instagram account and stories are committed on his website whereloveisillegal.com.
