Trans women encouraged to contribute to UN report

Thu 26 Nov 2015 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

Trans women are encouraged to join the conversation in ending discrimination against women ahead of New Zealand’s periodic report to the UN. A workshop for trans women to join the conversation in shaping New Zealand’s response to the UN’s Convention for the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) will be held in Auckland on 30 November. The Convention is often described as an international bill of rights for women and defines what constitutes discrimination against women. Discrimination against women is defined by the Convention as "...any distinction, exclusion or restriction made on the basis of sex which has the effect or purpose of impairing or nullifying the recognition, enjoyment or exercise by women, irrespective of their marital status, on a basis of equality of men and women, of human rights and fundamental freedoms in the political, economic, social, cultural, civil or any other field.” The Government is currently seeking public feedback on its draft report on the Convention before a final version is submitted to the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women in June 2016. The report outlines the progress that the Government has made to improve outcomes for women and to implement the articles of CEDAW over the reporting period of March 2012 to March 2016. It also outlines the government's response to recommendations offered in 2012 by the Committee following New Zealand’s previous periodic report. One of these recommendations is that the New Zealand government “improve access and quality of health services for lesbian women and transgendered persons.” In response to this the government states in this draft report that “The Ministry of Health is beginning work on a Sexual and Reproductive Health plan with the aim of completing a first draft by March 2016. Responding to the health needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communities will be a part of this plan.” The draft report has been released for public consultation and written feedback can be submitted via email to info@women.govt.nz before Sunday 31 January 2016.
