Vietnam passes groundbreaking trans rights law

Thu 26 Nov 2015 In: International News View at Wayback

Lawmakers in Vietnam have passed a gender identity law that is said to pave the wave for other transgender rights legislation.   The new legislation, which will come in to effect in early 2017, will allow anyone who has had gender reassignment surgery to officially register their gender identity with "personal rights in accordance with their new sex”, reported the state-controlled VNExpress website, citing a National Assembly report. LGBTI groups say the new law paves the way for gender reassignment surgery to be legalised and will mean people will no longer have to travel abroad to Thailand to undergo surgery. Local LGBTI organisation ICS estimates there are around 270,000 trans people in Vietnam, a country with a population of 90 million.
