New research claims that women are either bisexual or lesbian but “never straight”. Led by Dr Gerulf Rieger from the Department of Psychology at the University of Essex, the study has found that most women are aroused by videos of both naked men and women and as such Rieger claims this determines their sexuality to be anything but straight. "Our research shows that, when it comes to what turns them on they are usually bisexual or gay, but never totally straight,” says Rieger. The reactions of 345 women were studied as they watched videos of naked men and women with 82 per cent of these women showing signs of sexual arousal. The study is the first of it’s kind to look at whether both lesbian and straight women are aroused by both sexes. Finding that 28 per cent of straight women were aroused by men compared to 68 percent of lesbian women who were aroused by women, Rieger says the results that show gay women are much more aroused by their ‘preferred sex’ are “amazing”. He said lesbian women have arousal patterns similar to men. "In the past we thought it was true of all women that they were aroused by both sexes. The fact that it appears this is not the case is amazing.” The study measured the women’s arousal to the videos using eye tracking devices that monitored the dilation of their pupils.
