A gay German couple have welcomed 24 refugees into their home since July in an attempt to dispel claims that the influx of refugees is bringing an influx of homophobia to the region. Dirk Voltz and Syrian refugee Mjood. In the midst of the worlds largest migration crisis since World War 2, the couple - who live in Berlin - decided to do something to help those in need and have hosted refugees from Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq. They were also seeking to dispel claims made by a number of politicians that refugees are bringing a tidal-wave of homophobia to Europe. Dirk Voltz posted on Facebook that he and his partner have felt very safe hosting the refugees and have not had any incidents that would put their safety at risk as suggested by the politicians. “Mario and I are still alive. Perhaps, even more intensively than before,” he wrote. “Whether we´ll ever return to a ‘normal’, we do not know. How can I care about the luxury chatter from yesterday?” In a translation of the post by Buzzfeed, Voltz goes on to say “Really, what the hell is happening here?” “No Muslim who was there wanted to kill us in our sleep. No one insulted us because we are two men and share one bed. “No one, by any means, said they prefer Sharia law over German Law. We did not meet one person who did not regret leaving their home.” He went on to write that the only threatening behaviour they encountered had come in the form of “ordinary text messages, death threats on the streets, or insulting letters at the front door.”
