Ugandan activists have issued a warning to all LGBT people in the country after eight transphobic attacks were reported in less than a week. SMUG's Pepe Julian Onziema.Photo credit: Tadej Znidarcic The LGBT rights group Sexual Minorities Uganda (SMUG) are calling for Ugandan LGBT people to stay alert following incidents of mob beatings, home invasions and death threats targeted at trans people. "More than ever LGBT people should be on alert 24/7,” says Pepe Julian Onziema, Programme Director at SMUG. “Avoid walking alone especially in the night and going to LGBT unfriendly places for their own safety.” “LGBT persons have the right to dignity and to be protected against violence like any other Ugandan citizen,” he says.
