Record breaking numbers at Taiwan Pride

Asia’s largest pride parade was attended by record breaking numbers in the weekend.   Photo credit: Getty Images Nearly 80,000 people got together and celebrated this year’s Taiwan Pride held in Taipei. In its 13th year running the festival this year focused on LGBT youth with the theme ‘No Age Limits’. This year’s parade was the concluding event for the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association (ILGA) Asia Conference and as such the festivities were attended by activists and advocates from all over the region. In an addition to the national Pride festivities, Taiwan presidental front runner Tsai Ing-wen has pledged her support for marriage equality. The chairwoman of the opposition Democratic Progressive Party released a video on her Facebook page saying “Before love, everyone is equal. I am Tsai Ing-wen, and I support marriage equality.” She went on to say; “Let everyone be able to freely love and pursue happiness.” In 2013 a same-sex marriage bill passed it’s first reading in Taiwan however progress since then has stalled.
