100 lashes for gay sex in Aceh, Indonesia

Sun 25 Oct 2015 In: International News View at Wayback

LGBT people who are caught having sex in Indonesia’s Aceh province will now receive 100 lashes as punishment. Photo: SBS Dateline A sharia bylaw which came into affect last Friday bans both anal sex between men and ‘the rubbing of body parts between women for stimulation’. “The law is to safeguard human dignity. It is to protect Aceh’s Muslims from committing immoral acts,” provincial sharia chief Syahrizal Abbas told AFP. Sex between two people of the same sex is not a crime in the rest of Indonesia and the Aceh province is the only part of the country that is allowed to implement sharia law. Earlier this month two young women were arrested in the capital Banda Aceh after that were seen sitting and hugging in a public place, an act authorities believe proves they are a lesbian couple. Human Right Watch have said that the bylaw “a huge backward step backwards.”
