Video exposes China's painful "gay cure" therapies

Fri 16 Oct 2015 In: International News View at Wayback

A new documentary exposes the painful therapies hospitals in China are still offering in an attempt to ‘cure’ gay people. A video released as part of a new documentary Unreported World highlights the damaging practice of “gay cure therapies” in clinics which LGBT activists in China are working undercover to expose. Recommending electroshock therapy and nausea inducing drugs in an attempt to ‘cure’ the patient of their homosexuality, the video shows one doctor telling their patient, “What I want is to make you feel scared.” Such treatments are illegal in China and in a landmark ruling last year a clinic offering “gay cure” therapy in Beijing was ordered to apologise for their practices and received a fine. The activists say while it is illegal, it is clear these therapies are still offered.
