One of those event’s is the collective’s annual FAFSWAG BALL, combining American New York City ball culture with local Māori and Pacific flavour and never fails to deliver something unique and surprising. This year FAFSWAG need your support and have launched a PledgeMe Campaign to raise $3000 to help with operational costs such as venue and production expenses like audio, staging and lighting. FAFSWAG is made up of 10 official members that play key roles in organising and delivering the yearly calendar of community events and activations, all who volunteer their time, talent and skills and make sure the community has the space to be free and express themselves. A not for profit event, the ball is a space for community connectivity, empowerment and social confidence to grow. “Events like this are important for showcasing diversity and taking the time to celebrate what that might look like for people who are often left to navigate the fringes of our society,” says Gago. “I feel like fun is sometimes underrated in that instance as a legitimate method of connecting the dots and affording people opportunities to make meaningful statements about their identity and place within the bigger picture. “Ultimately we are all about the fun. And this community deserves some fun.” Check out the PledgeMe campaign here. To sweeten the deal there’s even some great rewards on offer like custom art prints, limited edition t-shirts and photoshoots.
