LGBT asylum seekers in the UK may face deportation if homosexuality is decriminalised in their home country. The UK may make changes to their asylum system, affecting those who fled their home country fearing for their life because of their sexuality and who have been granted asylum in the UK. Home Secretary Theresa May signaled the changes in a Conservative Party conference referencing a new ‘safe return’ system which would return people to their home country if circumstances have changed. Wanting to work towards reducing the number of asylum claims made in the UK and increasing the number of people the UK help in the most troubled regions, May said; “So we’ll introduce strengthened ‘safe return reviews’ – so when a refugee’s temporary stay of protection in the UK comes to an end, or if there is a clear improvement in the conditions of their own country, we will review their need for protection. “If their reason for asylum no longer stands and it is now safe for them to return, we will seek to return them to their home country rather than offer settlement here in Britain.” A review of the current handling of LGBT cases was ordered by the Home Secretary last year and she accepted the case for reforms.
