Pope Francis has met with US homophobic clerk Kim Davis while on tour in the US. Both the Vatican and Davis’ lawyer have confirmed Davis had a 15 minute private meeting with the Pope at the Vatican Embassy in Washington. Born-again Christian clerk Kim Davis was jailed for stubbornly refusing to do her job granting same-sex marriage licences in the state of Kentucky. She insisted she was acting “under God’s authority”. Her release from jail was a bizarre media storm and crowds cheered as she walked out to the victory anthem; ‘Eye of the Tiger’. Davis has claimed that the during that the Pope offered her his support during the secret meeting, saying in a statement; “I was humbled to meet Pope Francis. Of all people, why me? “Pope Francis was kind, genuinely caring, and very personable. He even asked me to pray for him. Pope Francis thanked me for my courage and told me to ‘stay strong.'” Speaking to media on a flight home from his tour of the US, Pope Francis answered questions about Christian ‘martyrs’ who feel persecuted by their actions. “Conscientious objection must enter into every juridical structure because it is a right,” he said. “I can’t have in mind all cases that can exist about conscientious objection but, yes, I can say that conscientious objection is a right that is a part of every human right. And if someone does not allow others to be a conscientious objector, he denies a right.” The Supreme Court legalised same-sex marriage across the nation in June however while in the US, the Pope did not overly discuss the issue of marriage equality.
