The Wellington Young Feminists are calling for the public to boycott the upcoming GirlGuiding NZ event Stop the Violence - formerly Take Back the Night - and say many are unaware of the organisers' “transmisogynist behaviour”. Following a recent series of events, the Wellington Young Feminists are urging those who are planning to attend this Friday’s event to boycott and have called for others to join them in making this successful, posting the following message template on their Facebook page; "Hi. I'm messaging you because you've indicated that you're attending the Girl Guides' "Stop The Violence" event (which they formerly called "Take Back The Night"). I'd like to ask that you not attend the event due to the organisers' silencing and bullying behaviour towards trans women (if you are aware of this and still wish to keep track of updates from the event page, I suggest selecting "maybe"). A statement on the GirlGuiding NZ website explains the change of name saying; “GirlGuiding New Zealand is changing the name of its Take Back the Night events to Stop the Violence Events. By calling the event, Take Back the Night, we have adopted something that clearly had significant social history when it used to run. We made a mistake in adopting this name and apologise for any subsequent hurt.” Many who are unhappy with the GirlGuiding NZ handling of this situation are planning a Take Back the Night event in Wellington, details of this can be found here. GayNZ has contacted GirlGuiding NZ for comment and are awaiting a reply.
