The week of celebrations kicks off this Saturday with the Pride Opening Party at Sammy’s. Aliens and cowboys is the theme for the night so you better start shopping - there’s only so many cowboy hats and green paint in one city! The annual not-for-profit event has many supporters in the city including Green Party Co-leader Metiria Turei who says; “Dunedin is a vibrant and open community and should both celebrate gender diversity while also addressing serious issues of discrimination. “We know that young people look for and deserve our support and acceptance of their gender identity and development. Participating in events like this go a long way toward demonstrating that and I’m looking forward to being part of it.” There’s a full lineup of events including a family friendly walk and pride picnic, the Art InQueery Exhibition, conversations about continuums with invited speaker Joey MacDonald, a zine making workshop with Sam Orchard, ‘Coming Out’ chat group, and a performance event produced by Counter Point productions. This year Dunedin Pride is being organised with the help of local community groups; UniQ, OUSA Queer Support, WWW (Wild Women’s Walking group), Chilly Lemon Design, Purple Passions Inc and Counter Point productions. Check out the Dunedin Pride website for all of the details and for volunteer opportunities.
