An 'anything goes' alternative drag competition begins in Auckland this weekend, and the organisers plan to make it a regular community event. Drag Wars is being organised by Anita Wigl’it and Kita Mean. It will be held at the Dog Bollix every month, with the first competition this Friday night from 9pm. At the end of the night the winner will be crowned “Miss Bollix”, in a vote decided entirely by the audience. “There are a whole heap of drag queens in Auckland with some really interesting, out of it kind of styles drag, and they just don’t have an opportunity to perform. Obviously there is Family which is great and has provided so much space for drag, and this will be another fun environment for people to perform and be who they want to,” Wigl’it tells GayNZ.com Daily News. Contestants can really do anything they like – it’s a completely alternative drag competition. “The sky’s the limit,” Wigl’it says. “We just encourage people to do whatever they want to – there’s no rules about the performance. They can sing live, they can have back up dancers, they can wear any costume pieces they want.” Cis women in female drag, traditional drag queens, drag kings – anything goes. Wigl’it says drag is evolving, something she believes RuPaul’s Drag Race has helped influence. There will be a bit of US flavour in the competition too, with $5 from the $10 door charge being given back to audience members so they can tip their favourite performer - something which is part of drag shows in the States. “We’re just really excited to provide a creative space where there’s no rules. And a safe, fun environment where people can just go and party once a month, a community event really,”Wigl’it says. Anita and Kita’s Drag Wars: Friday, from 9PM, The Dog’s Bollix, Newton, Auckland. Entry $10.
