Wed 30 Sep 2015 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback View at NDHA

Auckland’s famous strip is about to get another gay bar - Twist. The new bar and club will be in the old Coherent Bar just five doors down from the popular venue, Family.Co-owner Grady Elliott says the gay community have been asking for an alternative venue for sometime now; “It will be quite different to Family Bar, as we want to keep it as gay as possible,” he says. “Family has a very mixed audience.” The venue will have a pool table, two cages for dancing GoGo Boys, a ‘naughty’ dark corner and smoking area out the back. It will also be available to hire for private functions, including birthday and Christmas parties. “DJ's will be a blast from the past with DJ Ash Rooo and DJ Love both starting off the nights, then after special permission from the Corrections Department we are proud to bring you the Legendary DJ Starli. Plus you never know who you see doing guest appearances/ hosting; Buckwheat, Kita Mean, Tess Tickle, Dakota, D Zar Star, Stella Roadkill, just to name but a few.” Elliott’s last venture was Auckland’s first dry bar, also housed in the old Coherent Bar the dry bar only lasted five weeks before shutting its doors. He is now awaiting approval for a liquor license but says it should be granted in time for Labour Day when the venue is set to host one of the infamous Urge underwear parties. With a number of gay bars opening and then closing their doors over the past few years and venues seeing more of a mixed crowd Elliott says some people may ask why even open another gay bar. He says there is definitely still a crowd who want a defined gay venue “Auckland can sustain one more gay bar.”
