US Clerk jailed for homophobic stance

Fri 4 Sep 2015 In: International News

The homophobic US county clerk still refusing to issue marriage licences to same-sex couples has been jailed for contempt. The Supreme Court legalised same-sex marriage across the nation in June. Kim Davis from Kentucky’s Rowan County is still refusing to issue marriage licences, despite the courts ordering her to do so, due to her religious beliefs. A Federal District Court Judge has now ruled “her good faith belief is simply not a viable defence.” He adds “The court cannot condone the wilful disobedience of its lawfully issued order … If you give people the opportunity to choose which orders they follow, that’s what potentially causes problems.” Her deputies are now being asked to issue marriage licences – all are doing so except Davis’ son. She could have been released from jail if she agreed not to interfere, but says she will not accept that compromise. Homophobic Christians are now holding Davis up as a hero, and she has even been compared to Rosa Parks. While she argues for the sanctity of marriage, she had four husbands before she found religion.
