"This bill is designed to create an inclusive Australia, not a divided one" - Liberal MP Warren Entsch has presented a marriage equality bill in Australia, as a poll has found 69 per cent of Aussies back same-sex marriage. Entsch said his bill was designed to promote an inclusive society, not a divided one. "The main purpose of this bill is not a complex one. It is to give same-sex couples in Australia the same right to marry the person they love as that which is currently only granted by law to heterosexual couples," he stated. "This bill is designed to promote an inclusive Australia, not a divided one. "A divided nation is what we will be if we continue to allow discrimination in relation to marriage on the basis of a person's sexuality. “We believe that when it comes to marriage equality, that time is now.” The Bill is doomed – it’s likely to languish in Parliament without a vote. The ruling Coalition voted not to allow its MPs a conscience vote on the issue, with Prime Minister Tony Abbott promising a referendum instead. A new Fairfax/Ipsos poll shows 69 per cent support for marriage equality in Australia, and 53 per cent support among Coalition voters.
