Aus: New poll backs marriage equality

Mon 17 Aug 2015 In: International News View at Wayback

A same-sex marriage bill will be introduced into Australia’s Parliament today, however it’s unlikely to make it to a vote. It comes as new Fairfax/Ipsos poll shows 69 per cent support for marriage equality in Australia, and 53 per cent support among Coalition voters. "This poll shows the Coalition's decision to block a free vote has isolated it from the majority of Australians who value fairness, love, and equality,” says Australian Marriage Equality national director Rodney Croome. "With a majority of Coalition supporters backing reform, the poll shows the Coalition won't lose votes if it allows love to win." The poll was conducted after the Coalition vote. "This is a wake-up call for the government ahead of the expected Cabinet debate on marriage equality. It's time for the Coalition to show more respect for the majority of Australians,” Croome says. "The result also bolsters our confidence that if a fairly-framed plebiscite is held at the election, marriage equality will prevail."
