Hot women’s night Lick will make its Wellington debut next month, and demand is so high the Facebook RSVPs already outstrip venue capacity. Natalie Zibung (right) says the Lick team get regular messages asking them to come to Wellington Lick is run by Natalie Zibung, an expat New Zealander who organises events for lesbian and bi women in Australia. She manages to attract celebrity guests and DJs like Ruby Rose, Michelle Rodriguez and some of the stars of The Real L Word. She decided to bring Lick to Auckland almost three years ago, and it’s proved a popular night out in a city which lacks regular events for women who love women. (It’s also been fun when people ask those not in the know ‘are you going to Lick tonight?’) The inaugural Wellington Lick will be held at Meow on Edward Street, on Saturday 5 September. Auckland Lick resident DJ Marjorie Sinclair will be on the decks, along with local DJ Paige Julia. The demand for a Lick night in Wellington seems to be immense. “Ever since our first few months we've had heaps of girls drive and fly up to come to a Lick party, we get regular messages about when we are hitting the capital city and so to be able to finally make this happen after so long is already stirring up so much hype,” Zibung tells GayNZ.com. “The response to our event on social media has been massive, more than I had expected actually. We are still a few weeks out and we've got more RSVPs on our Facebook event than the venue's capacity!" As a result, pre-sale tickets will be available here from tomorrow. Lick has attracted some big names Aucklanders can head along to their Lick night at Goldfinch on Quay St on Saturday night (15 August). Every event has a fresh theme – this time around it’s moustaches, as in “lez get your 'stache on”. “Auckland's queer scene for women has definitely evolved since Lick started,” Zibung says. “To be able to provide a safe and comfortable space for us women to go and enjoy ourselves once a month, somewhere where we can put our hair down after a long week, catch up with friends and dance the night away at one of Auckland's most beautiful venues in a million-dollar location makes me so proud. “It has been a long road building Lick to where it is now. I'm proud to have grown up in this city and to be able to give something back to the community that I didn't have the opportunity of enjoying when I was growing up and coming out here. But I also could not have done it without my right-hand woman and manager Charli who has been the rock holding Lick up every month especially when I can't be around every time.” Zibung is promising a similar night of great music, talented female DJSs, a fun crowd and quality venue in Wellington. “Those are the ingredients to an amazing night at Lick.” Join the Lick Wellington Facebook group here And the Lick Auckland group here Jacqui Stanford - 15th August 2015
