Canberra Airport lit up in rainbow colours

Mon 10 Aug 2015 In: International News

MPs flying into Canberra are being met with the city’s airport lit up in rainbow colours and the message ‘#WeCanDoThis’, with cross party marriage equality legislation on the cusp of being introduced. The airport is owned and operated by the Snow family, the latest in a long line of businesses to back same-sex marriage in Australia. CEO of the family business is rich lister Terry Snow, whose son Tom Snow married his partner Brooke Horne in New Zealand last year. "Tom and Brooke's marriage in New Zealand was just a simple ceremony where two blokes were able to commit to love and support each other with the full support of their families and the state," Terry Snow has told the Australian Financial Review. "I can tell you from personal experience that their marriage did not devalue my marriage with my wife, and it did not have any negative effect on my family or the people of New Zealand. "Indeed, it demonstrated the importance of marriage as an institution to assist all deeply committed relationships. It is for this reason that Canberra Airport is expressing its support for equality over the coming weeks." Australian Marriage Equality National Director Rodney Croome says Australians are ready for same-sex marriage, which is why the campaign message is 'we can do this'. "When MPs and Senators walked off their planes they are likely to see that marriage equality is firmly on the agenda this with marriage equality banners throughout Canberra Airport and the Airport exterior illuminated in rainbow colours.” Australian Marriage Equality has also launched an ad campaign, which includes New Zealanders Danielle Cormack and Margaret Mayman.
