Numerous out actors and shows featuring lgbt characters up for Emmy Awards. Lily Tomlin in Grace and Frankie Transparent, received eleven nominations including Best Comedy Series. Jeffery Tambor has received a nomination for Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series for his role as trans woman Maura Pfefferman. Lily Tomlin's picked up a nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for Netflix's Grace and Frankie, and Alan Cumming received a nod for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his role on The Good Wife. Out actress Sarah Paulson received a nomination for her role in the mini-series American Horror Story: Freak Show, as did gay actor Denis O'Hare. Saturday Night Live's Kate McKinnon was nominated for her sketch performances, and out performer Tituss Burgess was nominated for his supporting role on Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, which also received an Outstanding Comedy Series nomination. Actress Tatiana Maslany has received a nomination for Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series for her role as basically half the characters in Orphan Black, including bisexual scientist Cosima. She will have to compete with another crowd favorite, Taraji P. Henson, for her role as Cookie Lyon hit show Empire, which received only three nominations this year. Uzo Aduba is nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her role as “crazy Eyes' on Orange is the New Black, which also received a nomination for Best Drama Series. In the comedy categories, Andre Braugher was recognized for his role as gay police Captain Ray Holt on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, while ABC's Modern Family was once again nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series. The HBO film Bessie is also up for awards, with Queen Latifah is nominated for Outstanding Actress in a Miniseries or Movie. The Awards will air in September.
