Akl Council dumps WiFi gender question

Fri 17 Jul 2015 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

Auckland Council is removing a pop-up on its free Tomizone WiFi which asks people if they are male or female. It was explained as being a way to help provide users with "the most relevant content". After users complained it was inappropriate, unnecessary and binary, the Council has responded that it's being removed by Tomizone. It's apologised for any offence caused. The Council says the pop-up question was part of a three-month pilot programme to tailor internet content to users, which has now finished. One of those who complained, Richard Hills from Rainbow Labour who is also an Auckland local board member, says while the pop-up should never have been there, he appreciates the quick action.
