Family First charity case back in court

Family First believes it's being targeted because it opposed marriage equality Anti-gay and transphobic lobby group Family First continues to blame its “traditional view of marriage” for moves to have it deregistered as a charity. The Charities Commission says it wants to remove Family First from the Charities Register because it simply does not meet the requirements of a charity. It says its main purpose is to promote particular points of view about family life, which is a political purpose, not a charitable one. The group is fighting that decision and is back at the High Court in Wellington today. It believes on of the key reasons for the deregistration is its opposition to same-sex marriage, which came into effect in New Zealand two years ago on the back of strong public support. More recently Family First has taken on transgender issues, describing transgender youth as having “gender dissatisfaction” and saying they “should not be given special rights which place others at risk”.   It’s retained tax-free status while the case continues.
