Ireland votes Yes to marriage equality

Sun 24 May 2015 In: International News View at Wayback

Ireland has become the first country in the world to legalise same-sex marriage by popular vote. In the end, the referendum vote was 62.1 per cent Yes to 37.9 per cent No. Only one of 43 constituencies voted against the proposal. The lobby group Yes Equality says it makes Ireland truly a nation of equals. “The people of Ireland have exercised their Constitutional right and by direct vote they have said an emphatic ‘Yes’ to Equality. “We now join twenty other countries where same-sex marriage has been made possible. We are the first country in the world to do so by a vote of the people.”
