Nigeria: men accused of being in 'gay cult'

Tue 19 May 2015 In: International News View at Wayback

Nigerian state governor Emmanuel Uduaghan has announced a crack down on "gay cults" Nigerian police have arrested 21 young men and accused them of being in a “gay cult”. Nigerian newspaper The Nation reports they were held in a police station last week. Nigerian state governor Emmanuel Uduaghan recently declared he would crack down on ‘gay cults’, saying “these are our young boys and men come to sleep with them”. The arrested men are all aged under 25. The grounds were that there were no women present, they had 122 condoms between them and that police had received a tip from the public. The Initiative for Equal Rights and a lawyer from the International Center for Reproductive Health and Sexual Rights stepped in to help the men, and they were eventually bailed. However the group says the men were physically assaulted and photographed in their underwear, made to write statements under duress and locked up in an overcrowded cell. They have not appealed their treatment because they don’t want to be outed, or branded as gay.
