Bondage book error has author in stitches

Sun 17 May 2015 In: New Zealand Daily News

An author of a humorous book about a pair of gay penguins, which shows them in bondage gear, says his laughter can probably be heard all the way to the South Pole, after a copy was accidentally ordered by a Canterbury pre-school. The picture book, meant for adults, is one in a series by Italian author Massimo Fenati featuring gay penguins Gus and Waldo. The copy which was found at a Kaiapoi pre-school is Gus and Waldo's Book of Love, a funny book which takes a closer look at their relationship. The page which caught a Kaiapoi mother’s eye shows them in bondage gear with the line “they love each other with a dash of spice”. The Press reports the book has since been removed from the library, with the pre-school saying it accidentally ordered a copy thinking it was suitable for children given its use of brightly cartooned penguins. “The offending bit that we did not spot until a much closer reading is that it depicts the two penguins in bondage gear,” it’s told The Press. "We now appreciate that it contains some adult themes that parents would naturally object to and have decided to immediately withdraw it but stress that young children reading it would be completely unaware of the significance of the clothing worn by the penguins. "The book is otherwise bright and funny." After spotting that story, the London-based author has emailed GayNZ.com to say he thinks his laughter can probably be heard all the way to the South Pole. “I must say I'm rather proud of my penguins!”
