UPDATE: Cate Blachett was actually misquoted Australian actress Cate Blanchett has revealed she has had "many" relationships with women. In a film about to debut at Cannes, Carol, she plays a married woman who falls in love with a younger woman, played by Rooney Mara. The film is based on 1952 Patricia Highsmith classic The Price of Salt. In an interview with Variety, Blanchett is asked if it was her first time playing a lesbian. She replied, smiling “coyly”, with “in film, or in real life?” before saying that she’s been with women “many times.” She doesn’t say much more on the subject, except to add her thoughts on labels about sexuality, when it comes to her character in the film. “I’ve never thought about it,” she says. “Her sexuality isn’t politicised. I think there are a lot of people that exist like that who don’t feel the need to shout things from the rafters.” Blanchett is married to playwright Andrew Upton. No date has been set for Carol’s release in New Zealand just yet.
